Places privileged by the tourism result to be the islets that face the south-oriental angle of Sicily, for the interesting variety show of echo-systems earthlings: slushes, little ponds, caves, tall calcareous coasts. The Capo Passero Island and the Tides Island have the common characteristic of the a little deep backdrops that separate it from the coast of Portopalo. Unlike other Sicilian coastal zones, these two islands are less subject to the aggressions caused by their condition of insularity; for such motive the natural environment results favorable to the archaeological and ecological studies.

To "Scalo Mandrie", the rests of a paleocristiana necropolis of the - IV sec. are still visible; once there was also two Roman ovens, destroyed during the construction of the coast road for Marzamemi. To little distance it is the falling establishment of the "great Tonnara of Capo Passero", of the tall Middle Ages and disposition prosecution of the ancient tonnara pre-Greek fret of the "Collo." Many inhabitants of the place were employed to the workmanship of the tuna, but from the fifties in then the commercial interest for the activity of the tonnara it diminished for the various motives, also the change economic conditions of the people, that set out to become small holders of boats and grounds.

Other place that deserves attention is the island of Capo Passero with the mighty massive structure of the Swabian-Aragonese fortitude of the sec. XIV. The island up to halves the '700 were attached to the coast from a thin and weak sandy arm, crumbled under the incessant action of the impetuous sea of the place. The presence of such arm allowed the form him of a roadstead, sure repair for boats pursued by the bad weather. In the dark centuries when Portopalo there was not, the island of capo Passero and the Tonnara were the only lived places. The first one from Spanish soldiers (Sicily, remembers, it was a deputy Spanish kingdom), the second from sailors and workers of the near countries.

In the island there was the church-chapel of the Announced (inside the boundaries of the strong one), the cemetery in the little curch of the Carmelo Mountain and a small court of local people, turned to the various jobs and always in anxiety and fear for possible piratical assaults. During one of the bloodiest of these, in 1526, the strong one was almost demolished by the pirate Dragut, north-African, then reconstructed, surer and stronger. But not only the island is interesting for the history and the strong one, but also for the characteristic geologiches and botanies. From the fifties it is finally risen stately, really in front of the Castle of Charles V, the Keeper Madonna, to protection of the sailors and the country.
